Wizkid is the stage name of Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, a singer and songwriter from Nigeria.
At the age of 11, he started recording music and, along with a few of his church buddies, created the group the Glorious Five. The group recorded an album together. In 2009, Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment and Wizkid agreed to a record deal (E.M.E).
After releasing “Holla at Your Boy,” the lead single off his debut studio album, Superstar (2011), which also produced the hits “Tease Me/Bad Guys” and “Don’t Dull,” Wizkid later gained notoriety.
Ayo, the second studio album under the same name, was released in September 2014. Six singles were released in support of the album, one of which was “Jaiye Jaiye.” After his contract with E.M.E expired, Wizkid departed.
Following his collaboration with Drake on the hit song “One Dance,” which topped the charts in 14 more nations in addition to the US Billboard Hot 100, Wizkid gained popularity on a global scale in 2016.
Wizkid became the first Afrobeats artist to be listed in the Guinness World Records after the song smashed numerous records. He signed a multi-album deal with RCA Records in March 2017, and later that year, his third studio album, Sounds from the Other Side, was published.
Five singles were released to promote the album, one of which was “Come Closer” with Drake.
He made a remix of “Essence” on August 13, 2021, with Canadian artist Justin Bieber. When it peaked at No. 11 on October 4, 2021, the song became the highest-charting song by an African act on the Billboard Hot 100.
He received two Grammy nominations for his album Made in Lagos and the song “Essence” at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards in November 2021. He was nominated for four Soul Train Awards in the same month and got one for best collaboration for “Essence.”
Wizkid’s fifth album More Love Less Ego, originally scheduled for release on January 22, 2022, the final day of the Made in Lagos tour, was announced on the first anniversary of Made in Lagos.
The Rolling Loud Toronto Hip Hop Festival will have Wizkid as its headlining act in 2022.
