Burna Boy is a Nigerian singer and rapper whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu. He is one of Africa’s most famous and successful artists.

 

He shot to fame in 2012 with the release of “Like to Party,” the lead single from his debut studio album L.I.F.E. (2013). Burna Boy signed with Bad Habit/Atlantic Records in the United States and Warner Music Group worldwide in 2017.

Outside, Burna’s third studio album, marked his major-label debut. In 2019, he was named an Apple Music Up Next artist and won Best International Act at the 2019 BET Awards.

 

African Giant, his fourth studio album, was released in July 2019 and won Album of the Year at the 2019 All Africa Music Awards as well as a nomination for Best World Music Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.

 

Burna Boy was named African Artist of the Year at the 2020 Video Music Awards. His album Twice as Tall was nominated for the same category at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2020, making him the first Nigerian to receive back-to-back nominations.

 

Twice as Tall won Best World Music Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2021.

 

On July 8, 2022, Burna Boy released his sixth studio album, Love, Damini. The album was preceded by two singles: “Kilometre,” which was released as an independent single on April 29, 2021, and “Last Last,” which was released on May 13, 2022, along with the announcement of the album.

His armed escorts allegedly shot and wounded two people at a Lagos nightclub on June 8, 2022. According to the wife of one of the victims, the incident started when she declined Burna Boy’s invitation to join him in the VIP section of the club. Five Burna Boy security guards were arrested and charged with attempted murder. The woman later accused Burna Boy and his family of using hush money to silence her family. The club has yet to release CCTV footage of the shooting.

 

Damini Ogulu was born in the Nigerian city of Port Harcourt. His father ran a welding business, and his mother was a translator. Eight months after leaving Aristocrat Records, he founded the record label Spaceship Entertainment in February 2015. Burna Boy started dating British rapper Stefflon Don in 2018, but the couple split up in 2022.
